Gus's Kitchen

Chef Dominic erupts over a water spot on a plate and fires dishwasher Wren on the spot. Wren is thrown out into the pouring rain without even his old coat.

Wren hits rock bottom by a dumpster and meets a raccoon who introduces himself as Gus. Gus speaks and offers to teach Wren how to cook in exchange for a real home.

Wren is stunned when the talking raccoon reveals he is Gabriel Ashford, a top food critic cursed by a chef. Using his last paycheck, Wren rents a rundown basement, and Gus announces that his first cooking lesson will begin at six the next morning.

At six in the morning, Gus drags Wren out of bed for a brutal knife-skills drill. Wren struggles through chopping and stir-frying, only to destroy the dish with too much salt. As Gus berates him, Wren suggests lemon juice and honey to neutralize the excess sodium.

Gus reluctantly tastes Wren's salvaged sauce and finds the acid, salt, and sweet perfectly balanced. Still skeptical, he tests Wren with a spice blend. Wren names all thirteen ingredients and their exact percentages, leaving Gus stunned that he has a million-dollar palate.

Gus barks orders about heat and chopping while Wren struggles and burns his hand, nearly giving up. Gus tells him to close his eyes and feel the pan. Wren finally folds a flawless omelet and tries to high-five the raccoon.

After another exhausting day of omelet practice, Wren prepares a late-night plate of leftover pork tenderloin with rosemary for Gus, even warming the plate. Gus bristles at being treated like a pet and declares he would rather starve than eat pity food. Wren says goodnight and leaves the dish to grow cold.

The landlord demands overdue rent by morning or Wren and the raccoon are out. Gus tells Wren to stop whining and sell his pasta on the street. Wren nervously calls out to passersby until a customer finally takes a bite.

Chloe, drawn by the aroma, tries Wren's risotto and declares it the best thing she has eaten all year. The line grows as Wren celebrates having enough money for rent. Gus, however, dismisses the success and tells him to go sign up for something.

Wren breaks down, insisting he is just a dishwasher who will be exposed the moment he steps into the light. He repeats Dominic's insults, calling himself trash and a rat in the gutter. Gus counters that neither of them is what people think, then gives an ultimatum: believe that bastard's lies and stay in the dark forever, or their deal ends. Wren stops him and agrees to sign up.
