The Answer After Closing

Professor Vale recognized the opening sentence before she recognized her own name. The book in the library drawer had been published fifty years before she began her thesis. It contained every argument she had written, every correction she had made that week, and one chapter she had only imagined. The final page was missing.

The night librarian brought her the lending record. Only one reader had ever borrowed the book: Vale herself, tomorrow. She tried to laugh. Then she found a coffee stain beside a footnote she had spilled coffee on that afternoon. Someone had circled the conclusion in red and written, This is where you stop listening.

Her thesis argued that memory could be reconstructed without the person remembering it. In the unwritten chapter, the experiment succeeded. Its volunteer lost the ability to recognize which experiences were hers. Vale searched the drawer again and found the missing page folded beneath the lining. It was not a conclusion. It was a withdrawal form, signed by the volunteer.

She returned to her office and rewrote the study's consent procedure before touching the final chapter. At closing time, she carried the book to the desk. Its pages were now blank beyond the introduction. The librarian stamped tomorrow's date on the borrowing slip. Vale asked whether she could keep the missing page. He smiled and pushed it toward her. Some answers, he said, belonged with the person who still had time to choose the question.
