The List Behind the Bookshelf

The instruction sheet began normally: emergency number, spare key, bedtime. Then came a sentence June could not explain: Count the blue books, but never the blue door. The children were already asleep. Their parents had returned early, and the father was holding an identical sheet recovered from his late mother's desk.

June worked as an archivist between babysitting jobs. She noticed that the instructions described objects the family no longer owned: a brass clock, a green telephone, a blue encyclopedia. In an old photograph, those objects stood in the room exactly where the numbered directions placed them. Together, they moved the remaining books into their former order. A latch clicked behind the shelf.

The little room beyond contained a sewing machine and a locked biscuit tin. June expected jewelry. Instead, she found letters from families who had once stayed in the house, each thanking the grandmother for a bed, a meal or a chance to begin again. The last letter was unfinished. It asked her son to keep the spare room ready for anyone who needed it.

He sat on the floor for a long time, reading. His mother had called the room storage because she never wanted gratitude to become a debt. June helped him catalog the letters, preserving every envelope. By morning, the blue door was open and the old sewing machine had moved to the hall. He crossed the final instruction off both lists. The missing item was not an heirloom. It was the part of his mother's life she had quietly left him to continue.
