The Code Woven in Silk

Sera noticed the stitching because one corner of the napkin had been repaired with gold thread. The pattern matched the hotel's floor plan, except for a narrow passage missing from the map beside the lift. Under her plate lay a second napkin with a single word sewn into its edge: Laundry.

She had come to the hotel to retrieve her sister's last suitcase. The manager called the disappearance a misunderstanding. Now the lobby doors were being locked for what he described as a security drill, and the receptionist would not meet her eyes. Sera folded the napkin into her sleeve and followed the service stairs down.

In the laundry room, a seamstress handed her a bundle of sheets. Her sister had discovered that the hotel withheld workers' passports. Before leaving to seek help, she had hidden a ledger in the linen inventory. The stitched map had been the only message the staff could move through the building without inspection.

Sera carried the ledger inside a stack of towels toward the passage marked in gold. At the final door, the manager asked to see her room key. She gave him the napkin instead. While he unfolded it, the seamstress opened the delivery entrance to the officers Sera had called from the basement. Outside, her sister was waiting beside their car. Sera returned the repaired napkin to its maker. The woman shook her head. Keep it, she said. You noticed where someone had taken the trouble to mend it.
