The Invalid Order

Captain Rowan received the first order at 04:10 and the second at 04:12. Both carried the correct seal. Both demanded immediate departure. One sent her relief convoy through the valley; the other directed it across a bridge reported destroyed the previous evening. Her lieutenant asked which order to obey.

Rowan laid the maps over the mess-hall lamp. Their routes crossed at an abandoned pumping station. A tiny annotation on the older map marked a maintenance tunnel beneath the road. Someone had chosen two impossible journeys to keep the convoy from noticing the only safe one.

The radio operator insisted that headquarters had authenticated both messages. Rowan asked him to read the acknowledgment codes aloud. They were identical, down to a transcription error she had corrected last month. The orders had been copied from an exercise. Whoever sent them knew the seal but not the soldiers who used it.

She split the empty trucks between the two advertised routes and led the medical supplies through the tunnel on foot. At the pumping station, her team found a transmitter repeating their own acknowledgment back to camp. By sunrise, the supplies reached the isolated clinic. Rowan's report named the forged orders and every decision she had made against them. When the lieutenant asked whether disobedience would cost her command, she handed him the report to countersign. Yes, ma'am, he said, and wrote the time they had arrived beside the names of the people still alive.
