Summer in the Attic

Their father had called the box empty for twenty years. Now that Lena and her brother Tom were clearing the house, neither could explain why an empty box needed two padlocks. Lena found one key in a jar of buttons. Tom discovered the other taped beneath their father's old radio.

When they turned the keys together, the attic lights came on. A small projector inside the box cast a silent film onto the sloping ceiling. It showed the same attic when their parents were young: a painted backdrop, improvised stage lights, their mother laughing at a missed cue. They had known her only as someone who disliked being photographed.

Under the projector lay a script with two unfinished scenes. Their father had written a part for each of them before either was born. After their mother died, he had locked away the film because he could not bear to decide whether finishing it would preserve her or replace her. The two keys had been his answer to a decision he could not make alone.

Lena wanted to digitize the footage. Tom wanted to perform the missing scenes. For once, they did both. On the last evening of summer, they projected the restored film onto a sheet in the garden and read the ending to their father. He corrected a line, then another, until he was standing beside them. Upstairs, the empty box stayed open. The attic had become a room they used, rather than a room they remembered avoiding.
