The Reversal Challenge

Liv began the livestream with the line her followers expected: Hey, loser. Across the table, her friend Cam smiled at the locked puzzle box. The challenge was simple. If he failed to open it in ten minutes, he would read an embarrassing confession on camera. Liv had already written the caption.

He opened the box in twelve seconds. Inside was a photograph of the two of them at their first school science fair. Liv reached to turn it away from the lens. Cam pointed to a second camera on the shelf, its red light steady. He had solved the box the night before and replaced the prize with a question: Would she still publish a challenge she had lost?

The comments filled the screen. Liv could claim the stream had malfunctioned. She could laugh at his preparation and make him look foolish anyway. Instead, she asked why he had kept the photograph. Because you used to like making things with me, he said, before everything needed someone to lose.

She stopped reading the comments. For the rest of the stream, they explained how the mechanism worked and showed the failed versions Cam had built. Fewer people stayed, but the questions grew better. Afterward, Liv deleted the caption and asked whether he would help design the next challenge. Cam said yes, on one condition. She waited for a punishment. He handed her the camera. This time, they would both be on the same side of it.
