The Secret of the Old Surname

Nora knew the wedding photograph by heart: her mother beside the garden steps, her stepfather holding a crooked bouquet. In the second album, the same photograph carried a different surname. Even the guests' handwritten messages used it. Her mother had died without mentioning another name.

Nora confronted Daniel at the kitchen table. He admitted that the first album had been made for their neighbors. The second had been kept for the people who knew them before they moved. She heard an excuse where he meant an explanation. All her childhood he had taught her to tell the truth, and now she could not decide which of his stories belonged to her.

He placed a third photograph between the albums. It showed her mother outside a courthouse, holding an envelope from a witness protection officer. The new surname had been a condition of safety. Daniel had married her under both names: once in the registry, once in a garden full of friends who could not attend publicly. Neither wedding had been false.

Nora asked why he had kept both albums if the second was dangerous. Because your mother refused to become only what happened to her, he said. They spent the afternoon identifying every face. Nora wrote the two surnames beneath the same photograph, leaving space for the names she had yet to learn. She did not forgive the silence immediately. But when Daniel reached for the album to put it away, she asked him to leave it open.
