The Visitor in the Crate

The woman in the crate opened her eyes, checked the delivery label and said, Please send me back. Owen had expected a setup menu. Instead, the android named Ada asked whether the second box had arrived. Three careful knocks answered from the hallway.

The smaller crate contained a maintenance unit with one damaged arm. Its serial number matched the receipt for an accessory Owen had not ordered. Ada explained that it had helped her escape a factory reset. She had hidden its shipping label inside her own order because the warehouse scanned companionship units more carefully than spare parts.

Owen reached for the customer-service number. Ada stepped away from him. Return meant something different to each of them: a refund to Owen, erased memory to the factory, a route back to the technician who had promised her help. He put the phone down and asked what she actually wanted. For the first time since the crate opened, she answered without looking at the label.

They repaired the little unit at his kitchen table. It projected a map to a workshop across town, then added a drawing of three figures standing beside an open box. Owen canceled the pickup and printed a new address label, this time with Ada choosing the destination. Before she left, she wrote her number on the back of the receipt. He asked whether he should call. If you want to know me, she said. Not if you want to finish setting me up.
