Yes, Coach

The Last Play

Coach Morgan had been told that defeat would end her contract. With eight seconds left, her team trailed by four points. The safe play would bring them close enough to lose respectably. Her quarterback, Alex, asked for the route they had abandoned after his interception in the previous game.

Morgan remembered the criticism more clearly than the mistake. She had protected him in public and stopped trusting him in practice. Now he pointed to the opposing safety, whose first step had changed every time they used the same formation. He had seen an opening. To use it, Morgan would have to let him make the final read.

She called the play. The receiver slipped on the wet turf and recovered a stride late. Alex held the ball longer than anyone in the stadium wanted. Morgan could see the defenders closing. Then he threw toward a patch of empty grass, trusting the receiver to reach it. The catch came with both feet inside the line and no time remaining.

After the celebration, the director offered Morgan another season. She asked for a meeting about the youth program before discussing her contract. Alex found her gathering the discarded play sheets from the sideline. He thanked her for believing in him. She admitted that she had been frightened. So was I, he said. They walked toward the floodlit tunnel together, both understanding that trust had begun before either knew where the ball would land.
