Chapter 1: The Summons
Tria had braided moonflowers into her hair.
But Delvan had summoned her to the central courtyard just before moonrise, and the old part of her—the part that had loved him before fate ever named him hers—had wondered if tonight would be different.
Maybe he had finally remembered her.
Not his Luna. Not the woman who sat beside him in council, soothed angry families, blessed newborn pups, and smiled until her face ached.
The girl who had once raced him barefoot through Silvercrest’s pines. The girl who had shared stolen honey cakes with him behind the elder hall.
When the mate bond awakened two years later, silver-bright and burning beneath her ribs, Tria had believed the Moon Goddess had only confirmed what her heart already knew.
Now, as she crossed the stone path toward the courtyard, that bond gave a faint, uneasy throb.
Delvan had not looked at her properly in weeks.
He still kissed her brow in passing. Still let her sit at his side. Still asked her to calm disputes and comfort widows.
But at night, his side of the bed had gone cold.
Tria pushed the thought away. Her wolf stirred, restless under her skin.
Tonight Delvan had called for her.
Silvercrest filled the courtyard from the raised Alpha platform to the outer ring of pine torches. Warriors stood shoulder to shoulder. Healers clustered in pale robes. Mothers held children close.
Their scents struck Tria at once.
A little boy lifted his hand to wave, then lowered it when his mother gripped his shoulder.
At the far end of the courtyard, Delvan stood on the platform in ceremonial black, the clasp of Silvercrest shining at his throat. Moonlight caught in his dark hair. He looked every inch the Alpha she had helped him become.
Selene, with pale gold hair loose over one shoulder. Selene, dressed in soft blue like sorrow made beautiful. Selene, whose lashes lowered the moment Tria looked at her, as if she were the one about to be hurt.
The ache beneath Tria’s ribs sharpened.
Her feet moved because stopping would have meant showing weakness, and Tria had learned early that a Luna’s pain belonged behind closed doors.
She climbed the three steps to the platform.
His gaze flicked to the moonflowers in her hair.
For one terrible heartbeat, something moved across his face.
Her name sounded formal in his mouth.
A whisper rippled through the pack.
Tria looked from him to the gathered wolves, then back again. “What is this?”
Delvan straightened. Alpha command pressed into the air, heavy enough that several wolves lowered their eyes.
“I have made a decision,” Delvan announced. “A decision for the future of Silvercrest.”
Beta Garian stood near the platform steps, arms folded, expression carved from stone. When his eyes met Tria’s, she saw warning there.
Her wolf pressed hard against her ribs.
Because Silvercrest was her home.
Because surely, surely, he would not make this cruel.
“For too long,” Delvan said, “we have bowed to old laws without question. We have treated fate as if it were command. As if the Moon Goddess’s bond should decide what an Alpha needs.”
A shocked breath escaped someone below.
Tria’s fingers curled into her skirt.
Delvan looked over the pack, not at her. “Silvercrest cannot be led by sentiment. We cannot confuse tradition with strength, or devotion with duty. An Alpha must be free to choose what protects his pack, even when that choice is difficult.”
Sharp and polished. Like a blade he had spent weeks convincing himself was honorable.
“He must not be chained,” Delvan continued, “to a bond that no longer serves him.”
The words slid under Tria’s ribs.
She waited for him to look at her.
Selene’s hand trembled delicately at her side. Her mouth pressed into a wounded line.
The perfect picture of reluctant sorrow.
Tria suddenly hated the softness of her own flowers.
The mate bond inside her reached for him on instinct, desperate and bright, like a hand stretching through darkness.
“I have chosen my true Luna,” he said.
An elder pushed forward, cane striking stone. “This is unprecedented.”
Delvan’s jaw tightened. “It is necessary.”
Her whole body had become one listening wound.
“Delvan,” she whispered. “Do not do this.”
For one heartbeat, she saw the boy from the creek. The boy who had pressed a golden heart necklace into her palm at sixteen and said, “When I am Alpha, you will never stand alone.”
The necklace rested against her skin now.
Delvan’s attention snapped to her. His hand went to her elbow, steadying her.
A raw line of agony opened behind her sternum.
Delvan faced the pack. “I, Alpha Delvan of Silvercrest, reject Tria as my mate.”
Pain exploded through the bond, white and blinding. Her wolf howled inside her, but the sound lodged in Tria’s throat. The courtyard spun. Hands reached from below, then stopped, because no one dared climb the platform.
No one dared touch a Luna being destroyed by her Alpha.
Not in front of the children she had held through fevers. Not in front of the elders she had served. Not in front of the warriors whose wounds she had stitched.
Delvan continued, voice lower now.
“I strip her of the title of Luna.”
Warriors shifted. Mothers clutched children. Omegas began to cry. Somewhere, a young wolf growled until an older one pulled him back.
“But she is our Luna,” someone whispered.
Delvan heard it. His scent soured with anger, though his face stayed controlled.
“There is no room for two Lunas in Silvercrest,” he said.
Garian stepped forward. “Alpha.”
Delvan’s eyes cut to him. “Stand down.”
“The council has not agreed to exile.”
The word struck Tria harder than rejection.
Delvan looked back at her, and this time she saw the truth.
Maybe not the full cost. Maybe not how deep the wound would go.
And he had decided it was worth it.
“By dawn,” Delvan said, “you will leave Silvercrest territory.”
For one heartbeat, no one breathed.
She wanted him to flinch. Wanted him to bleed. Wanted him to take the words back, swallow them, choke on them.
Instead, he stood there with Selene at his side.
Selene finally raised her eyes.
Tria looked into that pretty, sorrowful face and saw nothing soft at all.
Fur rippled beneath her skin. Her bones ached with the need to change, to run, to bite, to do anything but stand on that platform and be carved apart by the male fate had given her.
“Say something,” Delvan said quietly.
His scent wrapped around her, familiar enough to be unbearable. Pine smoke. Cold rain. Every night she had believed love was sacred because the Goddess had made it so.
“I hope she was worth the pack you just broke.”
Tria turned before either could answer.
The pack parted as she descended. Not because she commanded them. Because grief moved like a blade, and no one wanted to be cut.
She crossed the courtyard with rejection burning through her blood and moonflowers trembling in her hair.
Maybe they were waiting for Delvan to call it back.
Some foolish, bleeding part of her waited for his hand on her wrist. For his voice to crack. For him to say her name the way he used to.
Behind her, Delvan’s voice rose, wrapped in Alpha command.
The last thread of hope inside her went quiet.
There was no room left in her human body for that much pain.
Her dress tore as she shifted. Bones snapped and reformed. Fur burst over skin. The moonflowers scattered across the stone like little white deaths. Her wolf hit the ground hard, claws scraping, the golden necklace tangled in the thick ruff at her throat.
She bounded through the arch and past the herb gardens she had planted, past the nursery den, past the council hall where her handwriting filled records Delvan had never bothered to read.
Silvercrest had been her home from the first breath she remembered taking.
Now it spat her out beneath the moon.
The forest swallowed her at the edge of the village. Branches whipped her face. Earth flew beneath her paws. The torn bond dragged behind her like a chain hooked into her chest, but her wolf ran harder.
Until the torches became sparks between the trees.
Until only the moon remained above her, and agony inside her.
Then, faintly, carried through the dark by the bond that still refused to die, she heard Delvan’s voice.
For one terrible heartbeat, the girl with honey cakes and muddy knees looked back from inside her.

### Chapter 2: Chapter 2
It opened for her the same way it always had.
Dark pine. Wet earth. Moonlight broken across the ground.
Her paws struck hard against the soil, claws tearing through moss and root. Branches whipped her sides. Cold air burned down her throat with every breath.
Away from Selene’s lowered lashes.
Away from Delvan’s voice saying fate was not law.
Away from the pack she had loved while they watched her be stripped bare beneath the moon.
Her wolf did not choose a path.
Until the ache in her chest became fire.
The mate bond dragged behind her like a torn silver thread, still attached, still alive, still cruel enough to pulse with Delvan’s existence.
Maybe still holding Selene’s elbow as if Tria had been the storm and Selene the one who needed shelter.
A snarl ripped from Tria’s throat.
She leapt over a fallen log and landed badly on loose stones. Pain shot through her front leg. Her shoulder slammed into the ground. Leaves burst around her.
For one heartbeat, she lay there panting.
Pain did not matter. Hunger did not matter. Thirst did not matter.
Nothing mattered except distance.
She surged forward again, limping for three strides before rage forced her body smooth. The golden necklace tangled deeper in the thick fur at her throat, its chain biting with every movement.
When I am Alpha, you will never stand alone.
The first stream came fast, silver under moonlight. Tria did not slow. She plunged into the water, cold shock biting up her legs and belly. Stones shifted beneath her paws. Her injured shoulder screamed.
For one moment, the current tugged at her, eager to drag her downriver like a thing already dead.
Tria bared her teeth and fought across.
On the far bank, she dragged herself through mud and ferns. Water soaked her fur. The necklace struck her chest, heavy and cold.
Tria froze with one paw lifted.
Another answered from farther west. Not Delvan. Not close enough for her wolf to know. A patrol call, maybe. A warning. A search.
Her heart slammed against the torn bond.
For one wild second, hope lifted its bloody head.
Then the bond pulsed with Delvan’s command.
By dawn, you will leave Silvercrest territory.
Tria backed into the stream again.
Cold water swallowed her bleeding paws. She forced herself down until her belly brushed the current. The water would muddy her scent. The wet stones would break the trail.
If they were coming for her, they were too late.
If they were coming to obey Delvan, they would find nothing.
A third howl trembled through the trees.
Tria lowered her head and crossed downstream, every step slow, silent, and shaking.
Only when the howls faded did she climb out again.
The trees changed as she went deeper. Silvercrest’s familiar pines thinned into older growth, black trunks rising thick and silent. The paths vanished. No patrol markers. No carved boundary stones. No safe trails she had walked since childhood.
Safe was a lie told by warm beds and familiar hands.
Safe was Delvan kissing her brow while learning how to leave her.
Her paws struck sharp rock. The pads split. Blood scented the air.
The Luna in her knew better. She had scolded warriors for running on torn pads after border fights. She had wrapped their feet, pressed broth into their hands, ordered them to rest.
Do not let panic choose your direction.
She had said that more than once.
Now panic was all she had left.
A winter morning flashed through her mind.
The great hall crowded with shivering families. Food stores low after an early freeze. Delvan, newly Alpha and overwhelmed, facing angry hunters who wanted more than the grain count could spare.
She knew which pups were sick. Which elders needed broth. Which hunters had lied about their stores and which had gone hungry in silence.
She had solved it before Delvan finished clenching his jaw.
Afterward, he had kissed her temple and murmured, “I do not know what I would do without you.”
Her wolf lowered her head and pushed through brambles. Thorns scraped her muzzle and tore at her ears. The pain helped. It was clean. Honest.
The bond burned in cruel waves, each one dragging her back to the platform.
I, Alpha Delvan of Silvercrest, reject Tria as my mate.
A howl rose in her chest, but she swallowed it down.
If she howled, Silvercrest might hear.
If Silvercrest heard, someone might follow.
If someone followed, they might bring her back.
And the worst part—the most shameful part—was that some wounded piece of her still wanted to be brought back.
To muddy knees and honey cakes. To a boy laughing beneath pine branches. To the night his father died, when he held her hand like she was the last real thing in his world.
She found a slope and climbed, claws digging into damp earth. Her muscles trembled. At the top, the wind struck colder. Below, the world rolled away in black hills and silver mist.
There were no village lights below her.
For the first time, the truth reached her fully.
The children with scraped knees.
The mothers who trusted her with grief.
Silvercrest had not been a title.
It had been a thousand small devotions.
She had held that pack together with both hands.
And Delvan had torn her away from it in a single sentence.
It broke from her throat and spilled across the dark hills, raw and lonely and full of everything she had not been allowed to say.
For a moment, she wanted to turn back. Not to beg. Never to beg. But to stand before the pack again and force Delvan to look at the wound instead of the decision.
Mercy would have let her keep one piece of dignity after he took the rest.
She descended the far side of the hill.
The ground turned treacherous. Rocks hid beneath leaves. Once, her back paw slipped into a narrow crevice, and pain snapped up her leg. She jerked free with a sharp yelp, then froze, ears high.
Only insects. Wind. The distant rush of water.
It felt like being easy to abandon.
She moved slower now, though every instinct still screamed to run. Her mouth had gone dry. Her stomach cramped around emptiness. She could not remember the last meal she had finished.
There had been petitions at midday. A dispute over hunting rights. A young mother whose mate had not returned from patrol.
Tria had promised to check on her again after moonrise.
She would not check on anyone now.
The thought made her teeth bare.
Selene did not know which elder needed honey in her tea. She did not know the west den flooded unless the lower trench was cleared.
Another wave of bond pain struck.
She staggered into a tree, bark scraping her shoulder. Her body folded before she could stop it. The world narrowed to the burning thread inside her chest.
The words should have freed her.
The bond still knew him. Her wolf still knew him. Some ancient, sacred part of her still turned toward him like a flower toward moonlight, even after he had crushed her under his heel.
Tria curled her claws into the earth and waited for the pain to pass.
When it eased, she was panting.
The moon had shifted. She had run for hours.
Her body trembled with exhaustion. Her injured paw throbbed. Blood matted the fur near her pads. Her throat ached with thirst, but she could no longer hear the stream.
She forced herself forward until the trees thickened into a hollow where an old giant had fallen. Its roots had torn from the earth, leaving a dark shelter beneath them.
It smelled of damp wood, fox, and old rain.
Tria circled once on shaking legs.
Her wolf wanted to keep moving.
She crawled beneath the twisted roots and folded herself into the hollow. Mud cooled her belly. The golden necklace pressed against her throat, tangled in fur and memory.
But shifting back meant becoming human enough to feel everything.
Her wolf gave a low, tired rumble.
Tria rested her muzzle on her paws and stared into the darkness between the roots.
But exhaustion loosened the doors inside her mind.
Seventeen, lying beside her beneath the old cedar after rain, the new mate bond humming between them like a secret song.
Tria had confessed she was afraid of being Luna. Afraid to fail him. Afraid the pack would expect more than she could give.
Delvan had turned his head, eyes soft in the green-shadowed light.
“No matter what happens,” he had said, “you will always have a home beside me.”
A silent sob shook through her wolf’s body.
She did not know when sleep took her.
Only that it came like drowning.
And when the strange scent reached her—male, powerful, unfamiliar—it was already too close.
